e received a sample of Smokin’ Skullies Original BBQ Sauce so I went on to their website to look at the background of the sauce before diving into actually eating it. It is a relatively new sauce, established in 2009, and I was anxious to taste it because it described it as a “perfect blend of sweet and savory with just enough spice to wake up the taste buds and elevate the flavor of any food.” That intrigued me right off the bat.

“Just Leave the Bones” is one of the most versatile sauces on the market today.

So when I got the plastic bottle, I loved the label and it made a good first impression. It has a good old fashioned pig with a chef’s hat on holding a bone, which fits right into their slogan of “Just Leave The Bones.” The label spelled out exactly what type of sauce it was and there was no second guessing on what their marketing was. The sauce was brownish/red in color and didn’t seem too think on the initial first glance.

When I opened the bottle, you can smell a sweet and tangy aroma, probably a combination of the ketchup with the apple cider vinegar and some of the brown sugar/sugar. It smelled like a typical Carolina BBQ sauce and you could see the spices throughout the texture of the sauce from just looking at the bottle.

When I tried a little bit of the sauce on my finger, I was floored at how spicy it ended up being. I was expecting a little kick to it but nowhere did I read or find on the bottle of how much of a kick it had to it. I am not saying it was a bad thing, but it was surprising. It was more runny than I anticipated as well and I think that the bottle definitely needs shaken up to mix up the spices throughout.

I decided to use the BBQ sauce on chicken that I was going to put on a chicken salad. After initially tasting it and then pouring it and mixing it with the chicken, I decided to actually use it as the entire salad dressing too. I was highly impressed with how it went not only on the chicken, but the way it added a tremendous spicy flavor to the salad. You typically would think to use a Carolina BBQ sauce as a salad dressing, but I am glad I did in this instance. It was a match made in heaven.

What I like about this sauce is that you can use it two different ways and get two distinct flavor profiles. You get more of the tang by using it as a finishing sauce and more of the sweet when using it as a cooking sauce.

And nice touch with using it as a salad dressing.

Thanks for weighing in Wayne. Couldn’t agree more. We were very pleasantly surprised with this sauce. We have since tried it both as finishing and cooking, and were very pleased with the characteristics of both.
