e received a package from the kind folks at Dat’s Nice and I was excited to try all of their sauces because I hadn’t heard much about their Datil Pepper sauces. Their slogan of “It’s Not The Original…It’s Not World Famous…It’s Just Awesome!!!” shows that they know they aren’t the first or the most popular sauce company out there, but it actually made me want to try it even more.
Their labels on the bottle are pretty cool as they all have what looks like a replica of St. Augustine, Florida, which is a great idea. The labels are clearly marked which kind they are, and this one was the “Datil Pepper” sauce, which is their original sauce.
When you open the bottle you can smell the ketchup mixed in with a hint of the garlic and onions. It doesn’t have an overwhelming smell to it and it doesn’t smell that hot at all, but you know that it also has a ton of vinegar throughout. It is brown in color and you can see the peppers floating in the bottle. I tried a little on a spoon before putting it on any food, and it had a nice kick from the start. It didn’t burn my mouth that much at all and it had a nice flavor to it, highlighting a ton of the ingredients in it.
I tried it with rice and beans and it was an excellent complement to it. It stung a little bit at the beginning and lingered for a little while, but it diminished after a few seconds. This isn’t going to come across as a real heat burner, but since it is their original sauce, I think it would be great with grilled or fried chicken, as well as on a nice fried fish sandwich.
Datil Pepper sauce is perfect for seafood cooked any way, but it also makes fantastic meatloaf, hamburgers, grilled sausage, chicken… and you guessed it – Bloody Mary’s.
